Summer Travels with Snyder Family Campout

We had no idea retirement over 15 years ago would lead to so much fun living the RV life. We created this travel blog after a few trips to share our experiences and photos. While selecting this year’s trip photos, I realized our journeys were no longer that different or unusual. Not sure, but I think this will be one of our last blog posts to this site. Our plans are to travel as long as possible, staying in east and closer to home. As we go forward will look for a way to share our special photographs only. Stay tuned…

This year, our travels extended as far north as the Adirondack Mountains, with visits to North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Spending time with our family in the New York Catskills was the highlight of our year; it marked the third consecutive annual reunion where we have all met at Wilson State Park. Check out our travel adventure for 2025 with the photos that follow:

Jan and I love to travel, there is so much to see in our great country. Our list for a next adventure seems inexhaustible. Here we are in Mill Run, Pennsylvania enjoying the Frank Lloyd Wright Fallingwater House, a summer travel highlight. Both of us are drawn to the Arts and Craft style. We fell in love with this take on the theme with the addition of an organic design and setting.

Jan and I have this living on the road thing down pat. We are either on the road or planning the next trip.

Here are some pictures taken along the way…

A great day at the Glade Creek Grist Mill in the Babcock West Virginia State Park. The sign may have it right, however on this day we got drenched by a passing storm and had to seek cover from the threatening thunder and lighting.

Jan enjoying the view after a nice hike at the Natural Bridge State Resort in Slade, Kentucky. Great stop, we highly recommend.

Jan caught this shot as I was patiently waiting to start a tour at the Shenandoah National Park in Stanley, Virginia. Good fun exploring the history and taking in some great hiking trails at this national park.

Next up some shots of Flora and Fauna.

This mushroom caught our interest during our stay in Fayetteville, West Virginia.

The transformation kept our attention from start to finish. This guy measured over 9 inches. Guess it does not take much to capture our interest.

A fun display of ferns on a hike in West Virigina.

Very colorful tree fungus, looks like a type of Polypore, I think? No matter the type was drawn to the colorful display.

Over the years have been collecting trail pictures. The plan, create a slide show of the many trails we have trod over the years that caught our attention. This one is in the Adirondack Mountains near Cranberry Lake in New York. This shot filed for that future proposed show, stay tuned. Love the shots that show the way to an unknown destination.

Met this young guy on an early morning hike. He was just hanging out with his mother having breakfast, both who stuck around for a photo…

Lingering memories for us…

There were several excellent hikes at Fallingwater grounds. The tour was nice even though it felt too structured for our taste. Would have loved to do some behind the scenes exploration.

Getting a good picture was difficult. A multi-million-dollar renovation project is underway. Lots of construction to get in the way of that perfect shot. The plan is to go back when it is finished. I can relate to the need for some maintenance after 80 years.

The Glade Grist Mill setting is outstanding, a great place to get that perfect picture. I found it hard to select just one for this blog post.

This is Glade Creek, the shot taken from a bridge on one our hikes. I am a sucker for views like this… Nice trails which we never tire.

Here are photos of our summer home away from home…

This was perhaps our favorite camp site this summer. The site was on Cranberry Lake , it was a nice find. We plan to return next summer, although all the lake sites are not available due to a major restoration project. Great on the conservation effort but bummer there will be no lake lots available next year.

This photo shows that “lived in” look. The Big Meadows campground at the Shenandoah National Park is a fun stop with lots to do. The area is great and will be back for the 2026 tour.

Note the solar panels. Our gear now includes a battery pack to power the cooler to keep our beverages cold and even comes in handy to run the hand blender when cooking at the picnic table. when there is no shore power. With the four solar panels on the RV and our two generators can go off grid whenever we want. Although we do struggle off grid if there is no internet and mobile cell service.

Selected mountain views…

Another great day hiking in the Shenandoah NP.

Adirondack Mountains… I think we are falling in love with northwest New York State.

New River Gorge, near Fayetteville, WV. Took a similar picture last year and looks like we will be back in 2026.

This is the Natural Bridge in Slade Kentucky. Challenging hike to get here but well worth it. It was a beautiful day.

Great steps carved out of the rock at Natural Bridge by the CCC in the 30s.

More CCC craftsmanship at Natural Bridge Resort… Their work has withstood the test of time.

Fun view on a West Virigina mountain hike.

Selected water shots…

Fun view in the Adirondacks…

Here is a shot of the famous Black Water Falls near David, West Virginia. This area is certainly a photographers paradise.

The Little River at the Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail along this river has been one of our favorites for almost two decades.

The Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. Enjoyed our hike on the trail along this river. Loved this part of the state in spite of the narrow and curvy mountain roads.

Sandstone Falls on the New River in West Viriginia.

In the Catskills with the family, summer of 2025…

The Snyder clan in downtown Kingston, New York.

.

Our fun family adventure was with the Rail Explorers Phoenicia, Catskills, NY. Bit of a workout on a beautiful day. it will be hard to replicate such an adventure next year.

Group shot with everyone except Kevin who is behind the camera.

Mark at home on the deck…

David and Fiona at the campground…

Karl and Cully Rail Explorers!

Marty and Paul enjoying the day.

Paul and Marty enjoying a timeout.

Karl checking out downtown Kingston, NY

Kevin relaxing… We will be adding a hammock to our travel gear for next summer…

The end of the day ends around the campfire. A tradition!

Mark and Paul catching up…

It is hard to get this group to stand still for a family shot.

Here we are again ending our visit at a fun brewery in the Catskills enjoying a brew and some good food.

The end…

I can always find a sunset picture to share. This one on Cranberry Lake in the Adirondacks.

This is the end of the summer tour at the Smoky Mountains National Park, Elkmont Campground in Gatlinburg. Not sure we are ready to go home but the cold nights tell us it is time. Already planning the tour for 2026.

God Bless,

Larry and Jan
